Russian-English, English Russian Dictionary
This dictionary has 6,000 words. The concept behind it is very
simple. I have created a macro built around the search function
in Word. By entering an English or a Russian word, the macro will
take you to word in question and the translation will be beside
it. The dictionary is in English alphabetical order. I will
produce another version with the words in Russian alphabetical
order soon.
I could have designed the macro so that the translation would
appear in a message box, but by being able to see all the words
around the translation, one can see the other words which may
include a better translation of the word you are looking for.
Unfortunately, the search function will find the first instance
of the word, which may not necessarily be principal meaning of
the word; for example, if you are looking for "room", the macro
may find the translation of "boiler room" first. This is because
the dictionary is in alphabetical order and I can't think of any
practical way of identifying the principal meaning of a word. A
possible way would be to sort the words into two lists; the main
words first and the others. But then you would loose the ability
to see the related words around the translation. Any ideas to
solve this problem would be welcome.
There are four ways to active the macro;
by clicking on the macro button at the top of the dictionary
by pressing the F4 key or
by clicking on the button or
by using the menu (press Alt-E, W)
A dialog box will appear. Type in the word you are looking for
(if you are entering a Russian word, then you will have to use
the keyboard driver to get the cyrillic to appear).
There is an option to search for whole words only or for part of
words. This option is particularly useful for Russian words as
the ending often depends on the case, gender etc.
If the word is not what you are looking for, you can try to find
it again
by pressing the F3 key or
by clicking the button or
by using the menu (press Alt-E, R)
until you find the word that you are looking for.
That's all there is to it!

Tips
If you are still unsure about the meaning of a word, try finding
other instances of the word by pressing F3 or clicking on the
button or Alt-E, R. Sometimes you can get a better understanding
of the word in this way.
If you are a beginner to Russian and you do not yet know the
grammatical endings of Russian words, search for the translation
by omitting the last two or more letters of the Russian word and
choose the "Part of word" option.

Installation
Nota Bene. You MUST have a keyboard Driver program!
There should be the following files in the zip file
mal-slov.docthe dictionary itself
freeware.dotthe template
msserifec.fonthe MS Sans Serif cyrillic font
dialog.fonthe cyrillic dialog fonts for Word
First, make a back up of your current Word Dialog font before
installing the cyrillic dialog font. It should be in the
directory that you have Word installed. e.g. c:\winword
Then copy the dialog font into the directory.
The template should be installed in the directory where all the
Word templates are installed.
Install the MS Sans Serif font into the Windows System directory.
e.g. c:\win\system and install the font through the Control
Panel.
Open mal-slov.doc and everything should work!
